Karen Hilltribes Trust Water Project

Do you ever think about where your water comes from?

I was fortunate to lead a Karen Hilltribes Trust Water Project to help provide fresh water to the village of Ban Mae Najang Nua, in the North of Thailand, in the hills west of Chiang Mai.

Every year the trust works with Karen villages to provide safe access to water. We spent a month connecting to a spring, building a filtration tank, piping the water 3.5km, building storage tanks and piping it around the village.

The Karen Hilltribes Trust is a great charity to support and a worthwhile organisation to volunteer with if you have a free summer. The Karen Hilltribes Trust has worked in the North of Thailand for many years working with the Karen on education, sanitation and agricultural projects.

Damming a water source, the ‘T’ shaped inlet is on the left, the dam in the middle and water pipe is supported by bamboo on the right.

Building up the layers in the filter tank.

3.5 km of piping which we burried beneath the gound to protect it.

Building storage tanks with reusable moulds.

Installing taps around the village.

A big thank you to Will Bryson for letting me use some of his photos. He let me use his camera on the trip after I broke mine.
